Grant Kester holds a BFA in Photography from Maryland Institute, College of Art, an MA in Art History from University of Rochester and a Ph.D. in Visual and Cultural Studies from the same school. In addition to being a professor of Art History, he also is a founding editor of FIELD: A Journal of Socially Engaged Art Criticism.
Professor Kester is one of the leading figures in the critical dialogue around socially engaged art practice. His publications include Art, Activism and Oppositionality: Essays from Afterimage (1998), Conversation Pieces: Community and Communication in Modern Art (2004),The One and the Many: Contemporary Collaborative Art in a Global Context (2011). His essays have been published in Art in Theory: The West in the World -- An Anthology of Changing Ideas (Wiley/Blackwell, 2020), A Companion to Public Art (2016), etc.
